Session 03

Close Listening and Transcription

Week 13 · Friday

Overview

Bring your transcription attempts from the at-home assignment (from end of Session 2). Today we'll discuss your attempts to think about what we can learn from recordings; strategies for music transcription; and how transcriptions document and communicate musical knowledge.

In-Class Exercise — Archive #3 on WebCourses

  1. Compare: selected transcriptions from the Henry Reed collection; a previous student's transcription; and your own attempt.
  2. Note down: what did you choose to transcribe? What did you leave out? What was difficult about the transcription? What would your transcription tell someone who hasn't heard the recording? How did your own interpretation show up in the transcription?
  3. Analyze the previous student's transcription, and compare it with the Henry Reed collection. Ask the same questions: what did they leave out? What does it tell us about the recording? How did their interpretation show up in what they decided to include?

Deliverable

Submit the assignment "Archive #3" on WebCourses by the end of class. Graded based on completion and engagement. See rubric for more details.
